In response to circulating rumors, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has categorically refuted allegations that 30 million Filipinos could lose their PhilHealth coverage. These claims, initiated by the Medical Action Group, suggested that the government reduced the number of indirect contributors to the national health insurance system, triggering public concern.
Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman emphasized that all Filipinos, under the Universal Health Care Act, are guaranteed health insurance coverage. The government remains committed to subsidizing premiums for those who cannot afford them, ensuring the most vulnerable sectors are not left unprotected. Pangandaman pointed out that PhilHealth has over PHP 500 billion in investible funds, which can be tapped to meet its obligations.
The 2024 proposed national budget allocates PHP 101.5 billion for the National Health Insurance Program (NHIP), with PHP 80.283 billion set aside for 21 million indirect contributors. However, Congress reduced this budget to PHP 61.5 billion. Despite this adjustment, the DBM reiterated that there will be no reductions in PhilHealth memberships or coverage.
The DBM also warned against the spread of false and misleading information, noting that it is considering legal action against those responsible for disseminating the rumors. The agency stressed the importance of accurate information, urging the public to remain vigilant and avoid contributing to misinformation campaigns.
Secretary Pangandaman underscored the power of public discourse, cautioning that misinformation could erode public trust, particularly in critical sectors like healthcare. The government reassured citizens that all efforts are being made to maintain the stability and reliability of PhilHealth amidst these claims
