Thailand and Malaysia Aim for $30 Billion Trade Target by 2027

In a significant development, Thailand and Malaysia have set an ambitious goal to achieve $30 billion in bilateral trade by 2027. This decision was reached during the 3rd meeting of the Thai-Malaysian Joint Trade Committee (JTC) held in Kuala Lumpur. The meeting, led by Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, focused on enhancing economic cooperation and expediting the opening of agricultural markets.

Cross-Border Economic Initiatives
Both countries aim to link local economies through the twin trading cities model, connecting provinces and states such as Narathiwat-Kelantan, Songkhla-Kedah, and others. Efforts are being made to finalize the Memorandum of Understanding on Cross-Border Movement of Goods and Passengers, expected to be signed this year.

Infrastructure and Future Collaborations
Significant progress has been made on infrastructure projects, including the construction of new roads at border checkpoints, scheduled for completion in 2025. Both sides also agreed to promote collaborations, particularly in supporting halal entrepreneurs and franchise businesses, and enhancing cooperation in digital technology and data centers.

Trade and Economic Relations
Malaysia remains Thailand’s top trading partner in ASEAN and fourth globally, with bilateral trade amounting to $25.1 billion in 2023. In the first five months of 2024, trade was valued at $10.78 billion. The new trade initiatives and infrastructure projects are expected to further strengthen economic ties and drive growth between the two nations.

Conclusion
The collaborative efforts between Thailand and Malaysia are set to boost bilateral trade and economic growth significantly. The strategic initiatives and infrastructure developments underscore the commitment of both nations to achieving their ambitious trade target and fostering long-term economic cooperation.
